I ask that each student have a TI- Graphing Calculator for their math courses.  This will better help students visualize concepts in their math course.  Below is a link to better help you in finding the right calculator for your child. A Basic TI-83 graphing calculator is enough for their high school math and science courses.

High School Required Summer Readings 2016

Research has proven that summer reading for students is equivalent to a month of instruction. Students that read advance and students that don’t get behind. This creates what’s called a reading gap. Summer reading improves students’ overall test scores and writing abilities. This summer take the time to read the following novels and complete the following assignments.

Novels and Assignments:

English I Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare(No Fear Shakespeare Version Recommended), To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Assignment:

  1. Keep a Bible Journal for one novel. (See Attachment for details.)
  2. Complete an essay for the other novel. Essay Prompt: Choose a major character from the novel and explain how their surroundings have influenced their perspective. Compare their view of life with your own.
  3. Complete a “Major Works Sheet” for each novel.

English II- The Chosen Chaim Potok, Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare

English III- Daisy Miller by Henry James, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson

Assignment:

  1. Keep a Bible Journal for one novel. (See Attachment for details.)
  2. Complete an essay for the other novel. Essay Prompt: Define what it means to be an American, and discuss whether a major character from the novel fits your definition.
  3. Complete a “Major Works Sheet” for each novel.

English IV- Sir Gawain and the Green Knight translated by Burton Raffel, Hamlet by Shakespeare (No Fear Shakespeare Version is Recommended)

Assignment:

  1. Keep a Bible Journal for one novel. (See Attachment for details.)
  2. Complete an essay for the other novel. Essay Prompt: Write an essay in which you use a major character from this novel to discuss the importance of taking responsibility for one’s own actions.
  3. Complete a “Major Works Sheet” for each novel.

Accountability:

You are expected to have the above assignments complete by the end of the first week of school. Late and/or incomplete assignments may not be accepted.  You will be tested on the novels by the third week of school, and the summer assignments will be graded based on the quality of your work. All assignments are expected to be submitted in a professional manner.  Refrain from using Spark Notes, Cliffs Notes etc. (I’ll know.) You are strongly advised not to procrastinate. Have a wonderful summer and enjoy the readings. I look forward to working with you this new school year.
